Bring on the water

It’s the week of 6/8 so that means utility work commences!  As you can see in the image above, the crew has been out to the site already to mark up the road.  So exciting!

Beauty & Chaos

Our cacti are so pretty right now.  There are colorful blooms all over the property.

Here is one of the chollas we pass on our way up to our chairs. Stunning

While dumping our compost bin the other day, Brian had ANOTHER run-in with a cactus. Again with a cholla. About 30 seconds later, he knocked his foot against a discrete prickly pear. Not a good day for Brian-cactus relations.

There is a plant right next to our chairs that was recently overcome by these beetles. The night we discovered them, we watched 100s of these bugs crawling all over the place, The next day we came back - the plant had been devoured! Wrong place at the wrong time plantman

We just completed all of the steps to obtain our building permit.  It turns out it’s pretty straightforward to get permitted as an owner-builder.  Because we have played around in sketchup (a 3D modeling software), making models of our tiny house with potential floor plan ideas, it was a breeze to put together a few files for the building inspector.

We just completed all of the steps to obtain our building permit. One of the requirements was a site plan - this modified google maps image shows our property lines, the location of the building pad and where we plan on placing the house.

We took the dogs on a longer-than-usual morning walk last Saturday.  It was about a half mile road walk to the entrance to Boston Hill, the central open space near downtown (and also the landmark our property backs up against).  To get to the entrance, we had to walk along a wall for several minutes…if we could have jumped the wall, our road walk would have been half the time/distance.

So after letting the dogs run around off leash for awhile, it was time to head back – this time we weren’t doin no walk around.  The wall is at least 5 feet tall – so not easily to get on or off.  We found a place where the dirt was piled high, climbed up and started doing the trapeze act to get around to the other side.

After Brian climbed up, we had the dogs go next and I took up the rear.  This way the dogs would have a leader to follow and would hopefully not have a mini-freak out and try to jump down.  They did awesome!

The wall doesn’t look very high in this picture, but believe me, it was much too high for an easy jump down.  It was so high that we had to lift the dogs down.  You can see the clay-ish colored dirt behind me – that’s part of Boston Hill and where we let the dogs off.

The first sign that people see (if they're heading west) is one that reads, "Awful signs, Great coffee". We thought it was funny and put it up late last week. Since doing so, we have felt even greater sign freedom and recently made these. If you haven't had a Japanese iced coffee (what we are calling Iced Slow), then you should try it out. Amazing origin flavor
